Our mountain home, since 1930

ABOUT THE BAR 717 RANCH

For over 90 years, the Bar 717 Ranch has been a place for children and families to connect with nature, build community, and unplug.

Set on 450 acres in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the Ranch blends rugged beauty with timeless values, offering meaningful work, fun, and lifelong memories.

Founded in 1930 by Grover and Erma Gates, the Ranch remains family-run today under their grandson, Kent Collard. As the oldest accredited co-educational summer camp in California, we have developed strong traditions based on cooperation, resourcefulness, and respect for the land. These values that guide everything we do, from baling hay to building friendships.

The Collard family and Ranch team live and work on the property year-round, continuing its legacy as a working ranch through the fall, winter, and spring.

Surrounded by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the Bar 717 Ranch spans 450 acres of mountains, meadows, and creeks—just 16.8 miles west of Hayfork, California.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

We believe Camp should be a place where kids feel free to be themselves—to be accepted, included, and embraced by a supportive community of peers and adults.

We strive to create an inclusive, respectful environment for everyone, regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, income, national origin, race, or sexual orientation. We also recognize our responsibility to work toward an equitable society where all people’s rights and dignity are upheld. We stand with marginalized communities against systemic racism and continue to learn, listen, and improve as we uphold our values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
