What is the CILT program?

The Camper in Leadership Training (CILT) program is designed for campers completing the 9th and 10th grades. The goal of this program is to provide the opportunity for older campers to build positive peer relationships, enhance self-esteem through confronting new challenges, and build skills in the area of their choice. Through projects and apprenticeships, CILTs develop themselves as role models and leaders within the community. Our program focuses on helping campers connect with leadership opportunities at camp. That being said, we believe that the skills and experiences campers gain through taking on additional responsibilities in this setting are broadly transferable at home, at school, and in professional settings.

If I am a CILT, what will I do at camp?

In general, CILTs serve as role models and leaders for younger campers. In addition to this broad responsibility, the CILT program also provides a variety of ways for campers to contribute to the camp community. CILTs will have the opportunity to work together to plan major camp events, collaborate in program areas with counselors and resource staff, and experience the inner-workings of camp by working in the kitchen, sorting mail, and completing other jobs.

The program is designed to give campers the ability to select a level of responsibility that fits with their goals for their camp experience. All campers who choose to join the CILT program will be expected to participate in meetings, the CILT overnight, and other group projects. Additional leadership opportunities are available to any camper who wants to dig deeper into their own leadership potential. Apprenticeships in program areas, planning and execution of creative activities and projects, and trip-leading experiences are all optional ways to maximize the impact of a CILT experience.

Can I still do other activities at camp?

Yes, absolutely. CILTs are still campers and we want you to continue to enjoy your favorite camp programs. During the course of the session, CILTs may choose to participate in any and all camp activities, including backpacking trips and extended out-trips.

Do I have to be a CILT?

No, in fact you should only be a CILT if you want to! Participation in the CILT program is optional and we encourage campers to consider this opportunity carefully and to talk through any questions with the CILT directors or camp administrators. All campers eligible for the CILT program will be asked whether they would like to participate on the first day of camp.

What is the CIT program

Eligibility for the CIT (Counselor in Training) program is based on successful completion of the CILT program; a demonstrated interest in working with children, and recommendation by the CILT directors. Futhermore, for campers who are considering making the transition from camper to counselor, the CILT program can serve as a helpful introduction to life as a member of the Bar 717 Ranch staff. CITs live on a platform with younger campers and work alongside the platform counselor, taking on some the the childcare and program planning responsibilities for that group. If you have participated in the CILT program and are interested in becoming a CIT please contact us.

If I might want to return to camp as counselor one day, do I have to be a CILT?

No. Although the CILT program is neither a prerequisite nor a guarantee of future employment at the Bar 717 Ranch, campers who participate in the CILT program have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills and gain insight into life as a camp staff member.

We look forward to seeing you this summer!
